Access Art, 2004-2005

A series of open-forum discussions to identify ways to make Angel Row Gallery more accessible to disabled and deaf people, including guest experts. Access Art built on the examples of good practice brought about by the Drawbridge Group who worked to improve access for disabled and deaf people to Nottingham City Museums and Galleries.

Planning a series of discursive events; contracting specialists to present and chair meetings; producing marketing materials; organising event logistics including staffing, signage and setting up audio-visual equipment.

Outcomes
British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation provided at all talks.
Portable hearing loop purchased and used at all events.
Easy-read and large-print versions of exhibition texts made available.
All information films including subtitles.
Curatorial policy changed to include disabled and deaf artists.
Creative projects and activities developed with young people from Nottingham Royal National Institute for the Blind, adults from Nottingham Deaf Society, local students at residential special school Rutland House, and patients at Nottinghamshire Hospice.
